The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has introduced an insurance cover for members who currently do not possess an operating licence, aiming to strengthen welfare and provide financial protection for aviation professionals across Nigeria.
The initiative, unveiled during a recent stakeholder meeting in Lagos, is part of NAAPE’s broader effort to support members facing employment gaps, delayed certifications, or temporary licence suspensions. According to the association’s president, Engr. Abednego Galadima, the move addresses a growing concern over the welfare of aviation workers amid industry uncertainties.
Galadima explained that the insurance package will cover health, accident, and income-loss benefits, ensuring that members maintain a safety net during challenging periods. He emphasized that the scheme reflects NAAPE’s dedication to balancing professional advocacy with practical welfare measures.
The insurance cover, developed in partnership with leading underwriters, is designed to provide tiered benefits that reflect members’ years of service and technical experience. NAAPE said the goal is to ensure that every member—licensed or not—has access to financial protection in times of need.
Industry observers have praised the initiative as a progressive step in the Nigerian aviation sector, where pilots and engineers often face unpredictable career interruptions due to regulatory or market challenges. Many view it as a model that other professional bodies could adopt to safeguard their members.
The move also comes at a time when global aviation is recovering from pandemic-induced downturns and technical workforce shortages. Analysts note that providing such financial security could help retain skilled manpower and attract new entrants into the profession.
NAAPE further stated that the insurance scheme complements its ongoing advocacy for fair remuneration, enhanced working conditions, and professional recognition for its members. The association reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian aviation professionals both locally and internationally.
Galadima concluded that the new insurance cover is not just a welfare initiative but a statement of solidarity and foresight, ensuring that no member is left vulnerable in a highly regulated and competitive industry.
