The United States has urged Ethiopia and Eritrea to exercise restraint as tensions rise around northern Ethiopia, adding to concern that a renewed confrontation could destabilise a region still affected by the Tigray conflict.

The Associated Press reported on October 15 that Washington was calling for restraint amid worsening relations between the neighbouring countries. The latest tensions involve competing allegations over troop movements and territorial control, with the two governments disputing aspects of each other’s claims.

Reports from the region have also raised concern about civilian casualties and disruptions to health facilities following shelling. Responsibility for the reported incidents has not been independently established in the available reporting, and the allegations remain contested.

The relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea has shifted repeatedly since their 1998–2000 war and the rapprochement announced in 2018. The peace agreement ended years of formal hostility, but disputes over borders, access and the aftermath of the Tigray war have continued to complicate regional security.

Any escalation would carry risks for civilians, humanitarian access and wider stability in the Horn of Africa. Diplomatic engagement, transparent communication and protection of civilian infrastructure are therefore central to preventing further deterioration.

Developments remain fluid, and claims by the parties should be treated cautiously until independently corroborated.
