Nigerian payment technology company CashAfrica has partnered with Food Concepts, the operator of Chicken Republic, to introduce mobile tap-to-pay at the restaurant chain’s outlets, with the first phase covering 54 branches in Lagos.
The agreement was signed in Lagos on 13 October, according to Business Tech Africa. The partners intend to expand the service across Chicken Republic’s network of more than 350 outlets in 25 states.
The system allows customers with supported smartphones to tap at compatible point-of-sale terminals. CashAfrica says customers will not pay a separate transaction fee for purchases at Chicken Republic, while merchant fees will range from 0.3% to 1.5%, depending on transaction volume.
Why the rollout matters
Fast-food outlets provide a high-frequency test environment for contactless payments. A successful rollout could help normalise phone-based checkout beyond online shopping and traditional card use, while giving merchants another way to process transactions.
The key test will be operational: reliability at busy tills, staff readiness, customer awareness and whether the service expands beyond Lagos as planned. The announcement describes an intended expansion, not a completed nationwide deployment.
