Illustrative electricity infrastructure representing South Africa's renewable energy procurement

South Africa’s power utility Eskom has opened a qualification process that could bring private capital into as much as 6 gigawatts of solar, wind and battery-storage capacity.

The Request for Qualifications launched on 9 October is the first stage of a two-stage procurement process. Interested companies must submit qualification documents by 16 November. Firms that meet the requirements may later be invited to bid for individual projects through separate requests for proposals.

No project contracts have been awarded at this stage. The qualification round is intended to identify potential partners before project-level competition begins.

Why it matters

South Africa needs dependable electricity supply while expanding lower-carbon generation. Bringing private developers and investors into utility-scale projects can widen the pool of available capital and technical expertise, but the tender’s eventual impact will depend on bankable project terms, grid access, delivery schedules and transparent procurement.

For investors, the announcement is an opportunity to assess the qualification requirements rather than treat the 6GW target as already contracted capacity. The next milestones are the November submission deadline and any subsequent project-specific tenders.
