Lagos Urges Nigeria to Build AI Products, Not Just Buy Them

Read Time:1 Minute

Lagos State has renewed its call for Nigeria to become a builder of artificial intelligence products rather than remain primarily a consumer of technology developed elsewhere.

The message was delivered at the 11th Nigeria Innovation Summit, held in Lagos on October 6 and reported by TechTrends Africa on October 10. The state’s address connected AI development to practical needs in education, healthcare, agriculture, transport, financial inclusion and public administration.

The argument is that access to AI tools alone will not create a durable technology economy. Local firms also need the capability to develop products, protect intellectual property, recruit specialised talent and convert research into services that customers will pay for.

Infrastructure and talent must move together

The address pointed to connectivity, power, research partnerships and funding as parts of the wider innovation system. It also stressed that the talent pipeline must extend beyond software engineers to include professionals in fields such as medicine, teaching, law, business and public service who can apply AI to sector-specific problems.

That wider skills base matters because commercially useful AI is rarely built by technical teams alone. It requires people who understand the problems, users, regulations and operating environments the technology is meant to serve.

Measure outcomes, not announcements

The test for Nigeria’s AI ambitions will be whether more local products reach paying customers, improve services and create skilled jobs. Public investment claims and infrastructure targets will need to translate into reliable access for founders, researchers and businesses beyond major innovation events.

For policymakers and investors, the priority is to connect training, infrastructure, funding and procurement so that local innovators have a realistic path from prototype to market.
