South Africa’s mining production fell 12.7% year-on-year in August 2026, according to Statistics South Africa, extending pressure on a sector that supplies key export earnings and industrial inputs.
Platinum-group metals were the largest negative contributor, with output down 22.5%. Coal production fell 11.7% and iron ore declined 16.2%. Seasonally adjusted mining production was down 5.4% compared with July.
Mineral sales at current prices also weakened, dropping 15.1% year-on-year in August. The figures suggest that the pressure was not limited to physical output: lower sales values across several commodities also weighed on the sector’s monthly performance.
Why the figures matter
Mining is closely linked to rail and port logistics, electricity supply, industrial employment and foreign-exchange earnings. Sustained weakness can therefore affect suppliers and service companies beyond the mines themselves.
The August figures are a monthly snapshot rather than a complete outlook for the industry. Commodity prices, production interruptions, demand from major trading partners and the reliability of transport and energy infrastructure will all influence the next readings.
