Vatar, the Nigerian company behind the browser-based game Lagos Life, has raised $500,000 in pre-seed funding at a reported $10 million valuation, according to BusinessDay.
In a report published on October 9, the newspaper said the round attracted investors including Olugbenga Agboola, co-founder and chief executive of Flutterwave, through his investment fund Resilience17. Other named backers included Oo Nwoye, Terra Industries and Mono co-founders Nathan Nwachuku and Abdulhamid Hassan.
A locally rooted digital product
Lagos Life gives players an interactive, virtual representation of Lagos and everyday experiences associated with the city. The game’s local setting has helped it stand out in a digital entertainment market where many products compete for attention across global platforms.
BusinessDay reported that the funding round closed within a day. The publication said the investment values Vatar at $10 million, reflecting investors’ expectations that the company can develop the game’s popularity into a broader technology and entertainment business.
Attention is only the beginning
For a gaming company, a viral product can help attract users, but attention alone does not establish a durable business. Long-term performance depends on whether players return, whether new experiences keep them engaged and whether the company can build revenue streams that support continued development.
Potential routes for gaming businesses can include in-game purchases, brand partnerships, licensing, merchandise and additional digital products. These are possible models for the sector, not confirmation that Vatar currently operates each of them.
The company will also need to show that its product can grow without losing the qualities that made it distinctive in the first place.
A signal for African digital entertainment?
The investment provides a fresh example of investor interest in entertainment technology built around African experiences. It also raises a broader question for founders: can a product grounded in local culture find a large audience while developing a reliable commercial model?
Vatar’s next phase will be measured not simply by the attention surrounding Lagos Life, but by its ability to retain users, develop the product and generate sustainable business value.
