Airtel Money has begun trading on the London Stock Exchange following an initial public offering that values the African mobile money business at approximately £5.3 billion, or about US$7 billion.

Conditional dealings in shares of Airtel Mobile Commerce N.V., the holding company for Airtel Money, began on 9 October under the ticker AMC. Formal admission to the exchange’s Main Market and the start of unconditional trading are expected on 14 October, according to Africa Business Communities.

The offer price was set at £1.96 per share. If the over-allotment option is fully exercised, the offer totals about £582 million and represents roughly 11 per cent of the company’s share capital at admission. The offer consists primarily of existing shares sold by minority shareholders, meaning the IPO itself does not raise new capital for Airtel Money’s operations.

The International Finance Corporation was allocated shares worth £67.2 million as a cornerstone investor. The listing gives investors a new way to gain exposure to digital financial services in African markets, where mobile money has become a major channel for payments and access to formal financial services.

What the listing signals

The valuation reflects investor interest in the scale and growth potential of African digital payments. But a listing also raises expectations for disclosure, governance and sustained performance. Investors will watch user activity, transaction growth, regulatory conditions, competition and the company’s ability to turn a broad customer base into durable earnings.
