Nigeria has received another 111 citizens evacuated from South Africa amid concerns over xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Monday.
The returnees, comprising 44 men, 23 women and 44 children, arrived in Lagos on 8 October aboard South African Airways flight SA060. The ministry said the group was received by officials from foreign affairs, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and the National Emergency Management Agency, among other agencies.
The PUNCH reported that the latest arrival brought the total number of Nigerians evacuated from South Africa since the current exercise began on 10 June to 2,037. The ministry said the latest batch was funded through a donation made by the Redeemed Christian Church of God to support the return of distressed Nigerians.
The federal government said it would continue engaging South African authorities and other stakeholders to address xenophobia and protect the welfare of Nigerians living in the country. It also advised Nigerians in South Africa to remain vigilant and maintain contact with Nigerian diplomatic missions when they need assistance.
Beyond evacuation
Evacuation provides immediate assistance to citizens who want to return, but it does not resolve the underlying safety and diplomatic concerns. Sustained engagement, transparent reporting of incidents and credible action against violence are important for protecting people and maintaining relations between the two countries. Nigerians who remain in South Africa may also need accessible consular support and reliable information about available assistance.
