The Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported more than 9,000 confirmed Ebola cases and 4,381 deaths, according to figures cited by Reuters from the country’s public health institute on 13 October.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain and was declared in May. Reuters reported that it has become the country’s largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak, surpassing the 2018–2020 epidemic. Cases have also been reported beyond Congo’s borders, including a fatal imported case in Kenya.

Public health teams continue efforts to identify cases, trace contacts and coordinate a response across affected areas. Cross-border movement and pressure on local health systems complicate containment.

Why regional coordination matters

Outbreak response depends on timely surveillance, trusted communication with communities, adequate protection for health workers and cooperation between neighbouring countries. Monitoring and information-sharing support early detection; case figures can change as surveillance and reporting continue.
