Facebook Marketplace says users in Nigeria publish more than 835,000 listings each month, as the platform marks its tenth anniversary and continues to connect buyers and sellers in local communities.
The Guardian Nigeria reported on 13 October that electronics account for more than 180,000 monthly listings, while home items and fashion each contribute more than 110,000. Home improvement products account for over 40,000 listings, according to figures cited in the report.
The figures show the scale of informal and small-scale online commerce taking place through social platforms. Sellers can use local listings to reach customers without building a standalone online store, while buyers can search for products and contact sellers directly.
Trust remains central to online trading
High listing volumes do not automatically translate into completed sales or reliable earnings. Sellers still need accurate product descriptions, responsive communication and clear fulfilment arrangements. Buyers must also assess sellers carefully and use sensible precautions when arranging payments or in-person exchanges.
For Nigeria’s small businesses and independent sellers, the platform illustrates how digital distribution can lower the barrier to reaching local customers. The longer-term value depends on trust, transaction safety and whether visibility can be converted into repeat business.
